3 Hong Kong and Huawei demonstrate a 4.5G(TDD+) One LTE network
[Hong Kong, Nov.3, 2015] 3 Hong Kong, the mobile communications division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings (HTHKH, stock code: 215), and Huawei, today successfully demonstrated an innovative FDD+TDD and 4.5G(TDD+) network at the Global Mobile Broadband (MBB) Forum 2015 in Hong Kong.
The innovative 4.5G(TDD+) solution includes features such as four component carrier (4CC) carrier aggregation (CA), large-scale 4X4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) multi-antenna technology and 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (256 QAM) to significantly boost network capacity and peak download rates. During the demonstration at the MBB Forum, 3 Hong Kong paired FDD spectrum in the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz band with TDD 2300 MHz spectrum via CA technology, and achieved record download speeds of 1Gbps by utilising 60MHz of spectrum to maximise bandwidth efficiency.
Peter Wong (R), CEO and Group Managing Director of HTHKH and Ken Hu (L), Rotating CEO and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Huawei, demonstrate a 4.5G(TDD+) One LTE network at the MBB Forum 2015.
Mr Peter Wong, CEO and Group Managing Director of HTHKH, said: “3 Hong Kong and Huawei will continue to innovate and bring new mobile technologies to Hong Kong. We plan to re-farm our 900 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrums for LTE network deployment in order to develop a 5CC LTE-A network, further boosting the peak download rate to around 1.3 Gbps. By combining the strengths of mobile, fixed and Wi-Fi networks, we work tirelessly to provide customers with an all-round mobile communication experience with smooth and stable LTE service, plus high-quality content and customer service.”
Mr Ken Hu, Rotating CEO and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Huawei, commented: “Huawei and 3 Hong Kong have been partners for 18 years. We are honoured to work and grow with 3 Hong Kong to ensure that mobile broadband will continue to flourish in Hong Kong.”
3 Hong Kong is currently the only local cellular operator that possesses 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2600 MHz spectrums in Hong Kong. Huawei’s One LTE solution is a way for 3 Hong Kong to better utilise its spectrums and maximise bandwidth efficiency while providing an enhanced user experience. The technology allows 3 Hong Kong to integrate FDD and TDD networks through a multi-mode and multi-band SingleRAN platform, significantly improving network capacity and coverage as well as effectively lowering operating costs.
3 Hong Kong also showcased a commercial smartphone compatible with FDD+TDD 3CC CA technology at a 4.5G(TDD+) demonstration took place in Causeway Bay, one of the world’s most complex wireless environments. More compatible smart devices will be available soon. Driven by high-end users, demand for mobile broadband is particularly strong in Hong Kong, but the city’s density and topography, with skyscrapers separated by narrow streets, pose extreme challenges to wireless network planning and optimisation.
3 Hong Kong and Huawei have long cooperated to build a high-quality wireless network for the city. In July 2015, 3 Hong Kong, Huawei and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. introduced Hong Kong’s first end-to-end FDD+TDD LTE-A commercial network.
The Global MBB Forum 2015 runs until 5 November. Co-organised by the GSMA and Huawei in Hong Kong, it is being attended by 1000 leading operators, telecommunications associations, regulatory bodies, standard organisations, analysts firms, vertical industry partners and international media representatives from around the world.
