Security Advisory - Input Validation Vulnerability in Huawei VRP Platform

There is an input validation vulnerability in some Huawei devices using VRP. Due to the lack of input validation, an attacker may craft a malformed packet and send it to the device using VRP, causing the device to display additional memory data and possibly leading to sensitive information leakage. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-02011)

This vulnerability has been assigned Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-8785.

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to make the device display additional memory data, possibly leading to sensitive information leakage.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv3 scoring system (https://www.first.org/cvss/specification-document).

Base Score: 4.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N)

Temporal Score: 4.0 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

This vulnerability can be exploited only when the following conditions are present:

1. The attacker gains access to the device network.

Vulnerability details:

Due to the lack of input validation, an attacker may craft a malformed packet and send it to the device, causing the device to display additional memory data and possibly leading to sensitive information leakage.

No valid workaround is available for affected products. Customers can deploy Huawei NGFWs (Next Generation Firewall) or data center firewalls, and upgrade the IPS signature database to the latest version (IPS_H20011000_2016032300) released on March 23, 2016 to detect and defend against the vulnerability exploits initiated from the Internet.

This vulnerability was discovered by Huawei internal tester.
