Security Advisory - Escalation of Privilege Vulnerability in Intel AMT, Intel ISM and Intel SMT

Intel disclosed an escalation of privilege vulnerability in Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), Intel Standard Manageability (ISM), and Intel Small Business Technology in Security Center advisory INTEL-SA-00075. Unprivileged attackers could exploit this vulnerability to gain control of the manageability features provided by these products. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2017-05042)

This vulnerability has been assigned a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2017-5689.

By exploiting this vulnerability, unprivileged attackers could gain control of the manageability features provided by these products.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv3 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/specification-document).

Base Score: 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

Temporal Score: 9.1 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

This vulnerability can be exploited only when the following conditions are present:

An attacker can access the vulnerable devices.

Vulnerability details:

There are two ways this vulnerability may be accessed. An unprivileged network attacker could gain system privileges to provisioned Intel manageability SKUs, Intel AMT and Intel ISM are vulnerable and Intel SBT is not vulnerable. An unprivileged local attacker could provision manageability features gaining unprivileged network or local system privileges on Intel manageability SKUs, Intel AMT, Intel ISM and Intel SBT are vulnerable.
