Security Advisory-The AR Abnormally Resets When Receiving Special DHCP Packets

  • SA No:Huawei-SA-20130407-01-AR
  • Initial Release Date: Apr 07, 2013
  • Last Release Date: Apr 20, 2013

Access Router (AR) is a low-end router of Huawei. It provides both mobile and fixed network access modes, applies to enterprises.

In application processing on the live network, when special ip phone use DHCP to requests for address information from the AR, a special field is carried in the request packet. When the AR processes the special field, an anomaly occurs, causing the AR to reset. This vulnerability may be exploited by internal attackers on the LAN if they launch special DHCP packet attacks, therefore paralyzing the network (Vulnerability ID: HWNSIRT-2013-0301).

Currently, official fixs are available.

Solution:

Enable the AR to analyze the special field in the request packets.

This vulnerability is fixed in the following version:

AR V200R002SPC003 released in 2012.12.31
By exploiting this vulnerability, attackers can construct special DHCP packets to cause the AR to reset, therefore paralyzing the network.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

The score of the vulnerability is following:

Base Score: 7.8 (AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:C)

Temporal Score: 6.4 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

Overall Score: 6.4

This vulnerability can be exploited only when the following conditions are present:

The AR functions as the DHCP server and receives a DHCP request packet from a special ip phone.

Vulnerability details:

Some special DHCP terminals may carry a special field in the request packets. This special field is used for authentication and authorization with the DHCP server. However, because the AR fails to parse this special field, an anomaly occurs, and the AR is reset.

This anomaly occurs only when special ip phones connect to the AR.
